Donetsk, former (until 1924) Yuzovka, or (1924-1961) Stalino is a city and administrative center of Donetsk oblast, southeastern Ukraine, on the headwaters of Kalmius River. Donetsk city is a large railway and highway junction. Donetsk has an airport too.

In 1869 an ironworks was founded there by a Welshman, John Hughes (from whom the town's pre-revolutionary name Yuzovka was derived), to produce iron rails for the growing Russian rail network. Later steel rails were made in Donetsk city. The plant used coal from the immediate vicinity, and both coal mining and steel making developed rapidly in Donetsk.

By 1914 there were 4 metallurgical plants, 10 coal-pits, and a population of about 50 000. After the October Revolution (1917), Yuzovka was renamed Stalino and, in 1961, Donetsk. Heavy destruction in World War II led to postwar modernization and an increase in the scale of industry. Subsequent growth of Donetsk city was rapid and sustained.
In July 1932 the city became the centre of Donetsk region. In 1941 there were 223 enterprises of national and republican standing, 54 of them were local and co-operative enterprises. In 1961 the city was given a new name - Donetsk.

Now Donetsk is an administrative centre of Donetsk region.
Climate there is temperate-continental. The total area of the city is 385 km.
Its extension from the north to the south is - 28 km, and from the east to the west - 55 km.
Its population is over 1,100,000 inhabitants. There are 21 squares in the city. The city has 2200 streets and avenues. There are two water reservoirs - Kalmiuskoe (60 hectares) and the Donetsk Sea (206 hectares). There are also 5 rivers: Kalmius, Asmolovka (13 km), Cherepashkina (23 km), Skomoroshka and Bakhmutka.

Nowadays Donetsk is a dynamically developing big city with high industrial and scientific potential. It has a highly developed infrastructure and production basis. The city transport is constantly developing. Soon it will be possible to get to the most distant districts of the city by the underground which is being built at the moment. In addition to public and rail transport, Donetsk has an international airport.[30] It was constructed in the end of the 1940s to the beginning of the 1950s. The whole airport complex was finished in 1973. The city-based DonbassAero airline operates the airport.
